November 20 is Universal Children’s Day and the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child. To celebrate we are launching our fourth Republic of Childhood season with an exciting program of interviews of writers by students, conversations with young activists and innovative educators weighing in on amplifying the voices and concerns of children and youth.

This episode of the podcast celebrates two of Canada’s most acclaimed writers for young readers. Governor General’s Award winner Kenneth Oppel takes questions from Ottawa students about his latest, Hatch, book two of the Bloom Trilogy and Governor General's Award winner Deborah Ellis discusses her new novel, The Greats, with Alan Cumyn, winner of winner of the Mr. Christie’s Book Award for children’s literature.

Suitable for young writers aged 13+, this event is presented by Republic Of Childhood.

The Authors

Deborah Ellis

Deborah Ellis is a member of the Order of Canada. She has won the University of California’s Middle East Book Award, Sweden’s Peter Pan Prize, the Governor General’s Award, and the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award. She is best known for her Breadwinner series, which has been published in twenty-five languages, with $2 million in royalties donated to Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan and Street Kids International.

Kenneth Oppel

Kenneth Oppel wrote his first novel at age fourteen and hasn’t looked back. His books include the Silverwing series, which has sold over a million copies around the world; Airborn, winner of a Governor General’s Award and the Michael L.
