Books and Biryani: Dislocation: Finding Ourselves Again

Djamila Ibrahim writes of the consequences of both geographic and emotional upheaval. As people cross world borders in unprecedented numbers, what does such movement on such a grand scale do to us, both collectively and individually? In her debut collection of stories, Things Are Good Now, she draws on her own background to explore the joy of belonging and the bitterness of exile.

Books and Biryani is a must attend book event for anyone who loves literature, ideas, and discussion. This annual salon organized by the Ottawa chapter of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women features thought provoking writers and spirited debate on pressing and universal themes. As we hurtle into the tumultuous twenty-first century in all of its complexity, we yearn for answers. This evening celebrates both the cerebral and the sensual. Our minds will soar while steaming plates of fragrant biryani remind us of the simple earthy comfort of food.

 

Last year, Books and Biryani featured Cree cabaret and discussion by the novelist-playwright-musician Tomson Highway.  In 2016 they hosted Reconciliation: Listening to Aboriginal History with Waubgeshig Rice.

 

The Canadian Council of Muslim Women is a national organization devoted to the equity, equality and empowerment of Canadian Muslim women.
