Pop Matters

The Writers Festival is pleased to be presenting a once in a lifetime collaborative multimedia presentation conceived and spearheaded by the Hilotrons' Mike Dubue. Joining Mike on this unique project is Ian Keteku, World Slam Poetry Champion, hip-hop eccentric Socalled, cellist Octavie Dostaler and singer-songwriter Lynn Miles. Join us for the world premiere of this amazing presentation.

The Authors

Ian Keteku

Ian Keteku’s poetry is an articulation of a generation’s heartbeat. A magician with syntax he conjures new realities all in an attempt to better understand our existence. Keteku is a two time national slam champion and the 2010 World Poetry Slam champion. Keteku has showcased his poetry and art all over the world and shared stages with some of the biggest names in music and literature. He uses his voice to inspire messages of peace, action and critical thought.Ian Keteku is also a multi-media artist, producing thought-provoking poetic films. He conducts poetry, writing and performance workshops for students of all ages, inspiring people to accept the power of their own voice.

Lynn Miles

The music of Lynn Miles is truly one of a kind. Not only is she one of Canada's best singer-songwriters, she's one of the best, period. Hers is a voice that stands out, it's a voice that knows the ways and long twisting back roads of the world, a voice that has lived and conveys that living through every song. It's a voice we all know. It sings of love, loss, coping, travel, sense of place and purpose, broken promises, what get's us through, what doesn't, how we defy the odds, making a perfectly beautiful human mess of things along the way. As she sings in one of her songs, "It's not the hurt, it's what you've built around it, it's bitter and it's tall, you practice being cool and confident for so long now, you got yourself a wall, not everybodys gonna understand, so that's why they might say, try not to be so sad." Lynn's is a music that understands, that breaks through the wall around our hearts and speaks truth to our lives. New York Times music critic, John Pareles wrote that Miles' music "makes forlorn feel like a state of grace.” Lynn has 14 Albums to her credit, has won a Juno and four Canadian Folk Music Awards. She teaches song writing at Carleton University and has produced four albums for other artists. Mike Dubue

Michael Dubue is known to wear many hats with a career spanning 3 decades as a composer and musician, as well as a Juno award winning record producer. He currently tours and plays in Timber Timbre and runs the recording facilities Studio Cimetière, located in a 168yr old Church in Quyon, QC. From working as an FOH sound technician with The Sadies to numerous compositions, countless recordings and film soundtracks under his belt, Mike continues to boldly step outside of the box and defy the parameters and expectations of his artistic output.

Socalled

Socalled (aka Josh Dolgin) is a pianist, accordionist, producer, composer, arranger, rapper, singer, journalist, photographer, filmmaker, magician, cartoonist and puppet maker based in Montreal, Quebec. The subject of “The Socalled Movie”, a feature documentary produced by the NFB, he has been making records and touring the world for over a decade. He plays in the supergroup Abraham Inc. featuring Fred Wesley and David Krakauer and produced Enrico Macias’ latest album “La Voyage d’une Melodie”. His list of collaborators knows no generational, social, cultural or religious boundaries: he has played with, featured, recorded and arranged for Chilly Gonzales, Boban Markovic, the Mighty Sparrow, Roxanne Shante, Irving Fields, Killah Priest, Matisyahu, Theodore Bikel, Katie Moore, Enrico Macias and Derrick Carter.
