Claudia Mitchell

Claudia Mitchell is a Distinguished James McGill Professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education, McGill University where she directs the Institute for Human Development and Well-being. As the founder of the Participatory Cultures Lab, a CFI funded unit which focuses on the study and practice of participatory visual methods, she is  engaged in  social research with  girls and young women to address sexual and gender based violence. She currently leads a SSHRC-IDRC partnership grant Networks for Change and Wel-being: Girl-led ‘from the ground up’ policy making to address sexual violence in Canada and South Africa, and the Women and Gender Equity-funded study, More Than Words. She is a co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning journal, Girlhood Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal.

Dr. Maya Shetreat

Dr. Maya Shetreat, MD is a neurologist, herbalist, urban farmer, and author of The Dirt Cure: Healthy Food, Healthy Gut, Happy Child (Simon and Schuster, 2016), which has been translated into ten languages. She has been featured in the New York Times, The Telegraph, NPR, Sky News, The Dr. Oz Show and more. Dr. Maya is the founder of the Terrain Institute, where she teaches Terrain Medicine™, earth-based programs for transformational healing. She works and studies with indigenous communities and healers in Ecuador, and is a lifelong student of ethnobotany, plant healing, and the sacred.   www.drmaya.com

Fikile Nxumalo

I am an assistant professor of teacher education in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning at OISE, University of Toronto.  My work is centered on environmental and place-attuned early childhood education that is situated within and responsive to children’s inheritances of settler colonialism, anti-blackness and environmental precarity. This scholarship is rooted in perspectives from Indigenous knowledges and Black feminist geographies, as well as the environmental humanities and sciences. My book, Decolonizing Place in Early Childhood Education (Routledge, 2019) examines the entanglements of place, environmental education, childhood, race, and settler colonialism in early learning contexts on unceded Coast Salish territories in British Columbia, Canada.   www.fikilenxumalo.com
