From the Ashes: In Conversation
with Jesse Thistle
Hosted by Denise Chong

A memoir of resilience, spirit and dignity from a gifted storyteller. It is, at heart, also about the many shapes that love can inhabit. When you plan to read this book, clear your schedule. It will hold you in its grasp and won’t let you go, like a great novel. It’s all the more remarkable that this is not fiction. This book will stand out in my reading experience for a long time to come.
Join us as Denise Chong sits down for a conversation with Jesse Thistle. From the Ashes: My story of being Métis, homeless, and finding my way is a memoir that explores the impact of prejudice and racism, while also telling a story of hope and resilience. It is also one of the five contenders for CBC’S annual Canada Reads competition.
Jesse Thistle, once a high school dropout and now a rising Indigenous scholar, chronicles his life on the streets and how he overcame trauma and addiction to discover the truth about who he is.
Limit of 2 tickets per person. Please note: your reservation may not guarantee admission as the event will be overbooked. Unclaimed reservations will be released to standby customers ten minutes before the start of the program. We recommend that you arrive early.

This free event is presented in partnership with Ottawa Public Library, Library and Archives Canada, National Arts Centre and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
