The Authors

Dr. Kim Hellemans

Dr. Kim Hellemans is a teaching professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience at Carleton University. She has received several prestigious teaching awards that recognize her passion and dedication to university teaching, including the Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching Award and, most recently, the OCUFA Provincial Teaching Award. Her current research is focused on student mental health, with a focus on how current life stressors, cannabis use, and social media among university students relate to mental health and academic outcomes. She is also passionate about knowledge translation and knowledge mobilization and has created several freely available animations on the topic of neuroscience, addiction, and stigma. She is also the co-host of the award-winning podcast “Minding the Brain”.

Jane Bertrand

Jane Bertrand is the Program Director at the Margaret and Wallace McCain Family Foundation. The Foundation’s focus is on early childhood education practices, policies and research in Canada. Jane is also an Adjunct Professor at OISE, University of Toronto and participates in OISE’s Flex Early Learning PhD program. Jane was contributor to Early Years Study 4 (McCain, 2020), research coordinator for Early Years Study 1, 2 & 3 (McCain & Mustard) and a member of the research team for Toronto First Duty. She has authored a new textbook, Becoming and Being an Early Childhood Professional (2021), co-authored The Essentials of Early Childhood Education, Canadian Edition and contributed to several guides and handbooks related to play-based learning.
