In spring of 1978, the first issue of Arc Poetry Magazine was published by three editors: Christopher Levenson, Tom Henighan, and Michael Gnarowski. Forty years later and Arc has grown to be a nationally distributed and well-respected literary magazine, showcasing the best of contemporary poetry from Canada and abroad. In 2018 Arc is celebrating these past 40 years of publishing stunning, fresh, diverse and timely poetry.

The Authors

Ashley Hynd

Ashley Hynd is a poet with mixed ancestry who lives on the Haldimand Tract and respects the Attawandron, Anishnawbe, and Haudenosaunee relationships with the land. Like many people with mixed heritage the knowledge of her history is unclear. According to the stories in her family they are of Anishnawbe, Cherokee and metis decent. Her writing currently grapples with the erasure of her history and is as much an act of reclamation as it is a call of accountability for what has been lost. She was a member of the first KWPS Slam Residency (2018), was shortlisted for Arc Poem of the Year (2017), won the Pacific Spirit Poetry Prize (2017) and was member of the KWPS Poetry Slam Team (2015). Her poetry has appeared in Arc Poetry Magainze, Canthius, Room Magazine, Prism International and is forthcoming in SubTerrain. She has performed at a wide-range of events throughout Kitchener-Waterloo, including The Balderdash Reading Series (2018), Mysterious Barricades Suicide Prevention Concert (2017), Open Ears Arts Festival (2017) and Latitudes Storytelling Festival (2015). Her Hobbies Include trampling the patriarchy, avoiding doing the dishes and getting lost in conversations.

Carolyn Smart

Carolyn Smart has written seven collections of poetry including Careen, Hooked, and The Way to Come Home, as well as a memoir of her childhood: At the End of the Day. She is the founder of the Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers, poetry editor for McGill-Queen’s Press, and since 1989 has taught Creative Writing at Queen's University. Her two most recent collections of poetry have become award-winning theatre pieces, performed across Canada and in the U.K.

Mary di Michele

Poet and novelist Mary di Michele is the author of over 12 books, including selected poems, Stranger in You, and the novel, Tenor of Love. Her awards include the C.B.C. literary competition, the Confederation Poet’s prize, and the Malahat Review’s long poem competition. Luminous Emergencies was short-listed for the Trillium; Debriefing the Rose and The Flower of Youth for the A.M. Klein. She is part of the writing group Yoko’s Dogs with Jane Munro, Susan Gillis, and Jan Conn. Her latest collection of poetry Bicycle Thieves was published by ECW in spring 2017 and short-listed for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award. Mary lives in Montreal and teaches at Concordia.

Robert Hogg

Robert Hogg remembers well the night in 1960 when poetry became something utterly vital, visceral and necessary to his soul. He and Frank Davey had heard Robert Duncan read from The Opening of the Field. Hogg was transported: “It utterly blew me away. And I realized that I had to create something like that or life would not be worth living.” Hogg went on to complete his BA at UBC, where he became an integral member of the TISH movement. He holds a PhD in English literature from SUNY Buffalo; has taught at Carleton University in Ottawa; and has published five books of poetry.
