Join our host, Paul Wells, for an engaging exploration of Canada’s military history with Tim Cook, Director of Research at the Canadian War Museum and four-time winner of the Ottawa Book Awards, and Nahlah Ayed, award-winning writer, broadcaster, and currently a producer and host of CBC’s Ideas.
Tim Cook’s latest, The Good Allies: How Canada and the United States Fought Together to Defeat Fascism During the Second World War is a masterful account of how Canadians and Americans made the transition from wary rivals to steadfast allies, and how Canada thrived in the shadow of the military and global superpower. In exploring this complex and crucial dimension of the Second World War and its legacy, Cook recounts the story of two nations’ cooperation, sacrifice, and bleeding together to save the world from the fascist threat.
Nahlah Ayed’s most recent book is The War We Won Apart: The Untold Story of Two Elite Agents Who Became One of the Most Decorated Couples of WWII. On opposite sides of the pond, Sonia Butt, an adventurous young British woman, and Guy d’Artois, a French-Canadian soldier, are preparing for war. Their lives first intersect during clandestine training to become agents with Winston Churchill’s secret army, the Special Operations Executive. As the deadly conflict unfolds, Sonia and Guy learn how to parachute into enemy territory, how to kill, blow up rail lines, and eventually… how to love each other. But not long after their hasty marriage, their love is tested by separation, by a titanic invasion—and by indiscretion.
